Poe - by the time of his death at the age of 40 he had created a body of work which made him one of America's earliest cultural behemoths and secured his legacy as a major figure in supernatural literature.

Poe is best remembered for his stories of the macabre but he was also an innovator in the detective genre creating the rationalist Auguste Dupin to solve the Murders on the Rue Morgue - fifty years before a more celebrated proponent of deductive logic took up residence at 221b Baker Street.
